Dr Bandyopadhyay is an economist and policy specialist with more than two decades of academic, policy research and administrative experiences. Prior to joining IIM Lucknow (IIML), he was engaged with International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) as a Principal Policy Adviser. In this capacity he has also been leading the work on UNEP India Mission on Measurement of SDG 12. c.1. Besides that, he was associated with India Consensus Project administered jointly by Tata Trust and Copenhagen Consensus Centre, USA. Till recently, he was serving as Associate Professor and Programme Director at the Department of Business and Sustainability at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) School of Advanced Studies and was also the founding Head of the Department. He was also an Adjunct Senior Fellow with TERI.
He is currently a member of Steering Committee of Asia Pacific Resource Centre (APRC) of the UN Global Compact Network of India (UNGCNI) and also a member of the Board of Directors of Enterprise Incubation Centre at IIML. His notable engagement in the past includes serving as a member of the sub-group on transport sector formed by Government of India for providing inputs to the India Chapter of the Energy Technology Perspectives 2010 of International Energy Agency (IEA); columnist on energy sector with Financial Express; visiting faculty with United Nations University (UNU-IIST) and Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi; visiting scholar with Asian Growth Institute (AGI), Japan under Japanese Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS); transport specialist for a ADB commissioned project on Low Carbon Transport in India and China; invitee consultant with IEA/OECD; Economic officer with Finance Commission, Government of India and Research Officer to erstwhile UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Development.
He is an alumnus of Centre of Economic Studies and Planning, JNU from where he has completed his PhD in Economics. He is also an alumnus of Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership, Cambridge University and Babson College, USA from where he has completed programmes on business sustainability and entrepreneurship respectively.
He has supervised 2 PhD thesis and co-supervised 1 FPM thesis at IIML all of whom have been awarded final degree. His current areas of teaching and research interests include- Economics, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, Energy and Climate Policy, Business Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility, Transport and Environment, Sustainability and Inclusivity in Management Education, ESG and Impact Investing and Circular Economy.
His latest research works include a co-authored paper on effectiveness of carbon tax as an instrument of mitigation for urban passenger transportation sector in India published in 2019 in Energy Economics (a ABDC A* journal)(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0140988319300921) and a chapter on Sustainable Energy in an edited book titled
